Once they’ve created a weatherproof living area with either a fixed or retractable awning, many homeowners desire to furnish and decorate it to establish a comfortable environment for rest and relaxation. While our team designs and installs the perfect awning for homeowners, we’ve also put together some of our favorite tips for creating a zen space in your backyard.
What does it mean to have a zen space in your backyard?
Zen is a Japanese philosophy that “less is more.” The zen-inspired design strives to use fewer elements to create a peaceful and calm environment that enhances the brain’s ability to relax. It goes beyond the concept of minimalism to incorporate principles of colors, sounds, textures, and arrangements proven to have positive effects on the human psyche.
What are some ways to create a zen space in your backyard?
- Create privacy. Retractable and fixed awnings are a good starting point, as they not only block out sunlight and rain but also give you privacy from neighbors who have windows overlooking your fence. Sunscreens or bamboo curtain barriers are effective and attractive solutions to block the view of your backyard retreat, too.
- Choose comfortable seating. Put as much thought into your outdoor furniture as you do your living room furniture. Seating should be comfortable and inviting, yet simple and uncrowded. Zen principles encourage the use of natural colors, from beiges to forest greens, complementing the surrounding environment. Avoid bright colors or busy patterns.
- Add lighting. Lighting serves a functional purpose but is also integral to establishing a desirable mood for your space and in some cases, serving as a piece of art. Lighting should be simple and non-obtrusive. Ideally, select a lighting package that can be adjusted to be bright enough to play a board game under the stars or dim enough to calm your nerves after a busy day at work.
- Install a fountain. Fountains don’t need to be enormous structures with a surrounding koi pond, although those are very captivating features for a zen garden. You can achieve a zen-like quality by purchasing a simple fountain that can be easily installed on your patio or within a nearby flowerbed. Choose a fountain that makes sounds you find calming.
- Bring green into the mix. Leafy green colors make our brains feel in tune with nature. Adding a few plants or green throw pillows often makes people feel more relaxed. Don’t add too many decor items or plants, however. Remember the foundation of zen philosophy is “less is more.”
